Common Injuries Treated by Urgent Care

Sometimes a person may be faced with an injury or illness, but an appointment with their general doctor could be a few days or more away. However, a patient may be suffering from something that does not warrant a trip to the emergency room. In these cases, it is an optimal time to visit an urgent care facility. With quick wait times and the ability to treat many different injuries, urgent care may be just the right solution. This article looks at the various ailments that are typically handled at an urgent care facility.

Some common injuries treated at an urgent care

Along with respiratory and flu-like illnesses, below are some of the most common injuries that urgent care can handle on the fly.

Fractures

One of the most obvious symptoms that a person has with a fracture is the pain. There can also be issues with bruising, swelling, and bleeding at the site of where the patient may have a broken bone. Fractures commonly occur in auto accidents, but can also be caused by sports injuries or physical abuse. A doctor can typically tell when a bone is fractured by looking at the area; however, they may need to take an X-ray in some cases. The medical care profession can typically take the X-rays at the urgent care facility.

Sprains

Another common injury that urgent care can usually handle is a sprain. A sprain is an injury that occurs when a ligament that connects two joints together tears and causes tremendous pain to the patient. These injuries typically occur from falling, twisting or strong force to an area of the body. They are the most commonly occur in the knees, elbows, ankles or other joints.

Severe burns

When a burn is more severe than just lightly touching a hot surface, sometimes a patient will need immediate attention. An urgent care facility will be able to administer any treatment that will help in easing the pain, along with seeing how bad and what degree the burn is (first, second, or third-degree burn).

Urgent care or emergency room?

One thing that people typically ask about is if an injury warrants visiting an emergency room (ER) or if an urgent care facility will be a good choice. Since emergency rooms are for more extreme situations, patients should only visit the ER in true emergencies, most of the time urgent care will be just fine. It will usually be quicker and certainly much cheaper for the patient.
