Getting a DOT Physical From an Urgent Care

urgent care St. Augustine , FL

Urgent care services can do much more than diagnose illnesses and treat injuries. If you are trying to secure a job as a trucker, you will need a physical before you can hit the road. You do not have to find a place on your doctor’s schedule for an appointment. An emergency department can help and there is no need to schedule a visit.

Benefits of getting urgent care from the emergency room

For many of life’s health conditions, people visit a primary care physician for diagnoses and treatments. The doctor’s office requires appointments and is usually not open outside of regular business hours. Emergency departments, however, accept walk-in patients. The facilities are open all the time, including on holidays. These centers can accommodate most needs a patient would have, including serious illnesses and injuries. Patients would not need a referral to come here either.

Getting a physical: measuring blood pressure

Part of a DOT physical will address the person’s blood pressure. The doctor or a nurse will measure both the systolic and diastolic. A healthy adult will have blood pressure in the range of 120/80. A prospective truck driver with blood pressure in the range of 130 to 139 systolic and 80 to 89 diastolic should not raise big concerns. However, if the physical at urgent care shows the range to be more than 140 and more than 90, the patient should get more information on how to reduce those numbers.

Vision tests

Clearly, having good vision is critical for the success of a truck driver. Driving without an incident is the No. 1 objective in this line of work, so the patient must pass this part of the physical with satisfactory results. The doctor will perform an eye test by having the person read letters or numbers from a chart. The person will look at the figures from different distances and with both eyes individually while covering the other one. This test is important in determining whether the patient may need corrective eyewear.

Hearing tests

During a physical at an urgent care facility, the patient will undergo a series of tests to measure their hearing. The doctor will also physically examine the ear to check for blockage or signs of any other abnormalities such as growths or damage. It is possible for one ear to pass the exams but for the other one to fail.

General wellness

The DOT physical will also assess whether the person would be fit to sit for long periods of time. The driver-to-be will also need to have good reflexes and reaction time as well as the ability to bend and stretch without pain or discomfort. Emergency room urgent care examines the person’s joints, muscles and skeletal system.

Have a clean bill of health

While a truck driver does not have to be in pristine condition, employers will require a DOT physical. If you are having trouble getting an appointment at the doctor’s office, you can get urgent care at a full-service emergency room. The physicians here have the knowledge and training to assess your wellness. Stop by today and get the information and confirmation you need.
