Should I Visit an Urgent Care for Pink Eye?

It is not uncommon for our urgent care clinic near St. Augustine to see people of all ages come in with red, itchy eyes. Often, they have pink eye. This is a common infection in both children and adults.

If you have pink eye, you can visit our center for treatment. Read on to find out more about what causes pink eye and how we can treat it.

Understanding pink eye

The medical name for pink eye is conjunctivitis. It gets its name from the fact that it affects the membrane on the inside of the eyelid. This is called the conjunctiva. This thin membrane also covers the outer eyeball.

Pink eye causes red, itchy eyes that produce a watery or snot-like discharge. The discharge can be either yellow or green and is very off-putting. The type of pink eye you have determines if you need to go to an urgent care center.

Viral pink eye

Viral pink eye will go away by itself and does not call for a visit to an urgent care center. The viruses responsible for the following diseases can also cause pink eye:

  • The common cold
  • Measles
  • Chickenpox

You can identify viral pink eye by its watery discharge that does not look like mucus. Viral pink eye goes away after ten days, so you simply need to wait it out. That said, you can use some home remedies to manage the symptoms. This may reduce the itchiness or redness, providing some relief.

Bacterial pink eye

Pink eye can be caused by bacteria as well. This type of conjunctivitis comes with the eye-catching yet gross yellow/green discharge. You need to take a course of antibiotics to treat this infection. For this reason, you should seek medical attention to get relief.

Some people get seasonal allergies that cause the symptoms of pink eye. They should visit an urgent care center to rule out other causes of pink eye and to get a prescription of antihistamines or eye drops.

The medication clears up the symptoms relatively fast. Once you know that you have allergic conjunctivitis, you can refill their prescription as needed.

At our urgent care clinic, a medical practitioner will confirm the bacterial pink eye and prescribe the needed medication. Because we allow for same-day and walk-in visits, you can visit an urgent care center when it is convenient. This can help you avoid waiting for the next available appointment at your doctor’s office.

Let a professional examine your itchy eyes

If your eye is infected, you should get a medical professional to confirm the type of pink eye you have. They will give you the right diagnosis, the medication you need and advice on how to manage the pink eye at home.

When you visit our urgent care center, you can simply walk in and see one of our care providers. However, if you have questions about our services or hours, feel free to call us for more information.
