What to Do With a Sprain on the Way to Urgent Care
When a person sprains a joint in their body, they are quite aware of the pain and know that they need medical attention, and visiting an urgent care could be the solution.
Ligaments in the body are held together with a type of elastic band that attach from one bone to the other. A sprain is when these ligaments are torn and are either partially or completely torn apart.
Tears to the ankle, wrist, elbow and thumbs are the most common sprains that occur: any sprain is typically painful and swells rapidly. A good rule of thumb is that the more intense the pain and faster the swelling, the worse the sprain. Either way, today we will look at the best way to take care of a sprain while on the way to an urgent care facility.
Caring for a sprain
For people who have sprained a joint in their body, taking proper care of it until reaching an urgent care facility is essential. This ensures that there will be no further damage, along with helping to reduce the amount of pain and swelling. The acronym that people have created in reference on how to care for a sprain is termed “RICE.” It stands for Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate, and it is useful in an emergency to help begin caring for the injury right away.
The first letter of the acronym “RICE” stands for “Rest.” It is essential to let the injured area or limb rest, do not use it or put any pressure or weight on it. After visiting the urgent care and the doctor looks at the sprain, they may recommend elevating the injury with little movement for 48 to 72 hours. This will, of course, depend on the severity of the injury.
One thing that is vital for reducing the swelling is to put an ice compress on the area. As soon as the injury has occurred, begin putting ice packs on it for 15 to 20 minutes each time to help keep the swelling to a minimal level. It is said to be safe to do the 15 to 20-minute ice pack treatments between 4 to 8 times a day, although the doctor will let you know the proper amount when visiting the urgent care. It is critical to remember to not use the ice pack too much on the sprain. Having extended periods of icing or doing it too frequently can cause further damage to the ligaments.
This is typically done using an elastic wrap or type of bandage. The area will be compressed and not able to move as easily, giving the ligaments time to heal.
Keeping the injured area elevated will help with the blood flow to the area and significantly reduce the pain. Doing this may not seem like something that would help; however, after doing it, the patient will immediately notice a difference.
